If you like the idea of using solar energy, but the thought of converting your entire house to solar energy seems like just too big of a project (and too big of an expense), then installing some solar string lights is an easy project to take on.
First, think about where you would like to have some accent lighting, since solar lights are the least expensive to buy and the most convenient to install. If you’re not sure, then hanging string lighting is an inexpensive way to add some ambiance to your outdoor living area. Since they’re not permanent, you can try them out to see if you like them, and where you like them.
Planning is relatively easy. Decide where you would like to hang the string lights, then measure to determine the length of lighting that you will need. Are there hooks or brackets already in place that can be used to support the lights? If not, determine where you could install them, and include the hooks or brackets on your shopping list.
Solar string lights, affordable and multicolor decorative lighting
Next, you’ll need to make a design decision about whether you want to use multicolored lights (often used as solar Christmas lights, but there’s no rule that says you can’t use them year round), a single-colored string (you can choose your favorite color or match your patio furniture), or a clear string (sometimes known as Italian lights, because they’re often seen in Italian restaurant decor). Solar rope lights can also be a good alternative.
Most solar string lights can be used straight out of the package
You will just need a screwdriver (and perhaps a portable drill), if you need to install hooks to hang the string from. You will have to position the solar panels so that they get full exposure to the sun, and then let them charge for a few days before turning the lights on, so plan ahead if you’re installing them for a party or celebration.
Once they’re fully charged, you’ll be able to enjoy them year round if you choose. It’s surprising how much romance and personality string lights add to an outdoor living space. And even when the weather is cold, they make a pretty sight to look at from the warmth of your living room indoors.
