Solar security lights are perfect for keeping your residence safe, by discouraging potential intruders. It is also a practical and easy way for lighting occasionally-used places like pathway, garages and sheds. Solar powered security lights can also make good porch lights, welcoming you and your guests. Because they are powered by solar energy, no electric sockets or cables are necessary. Just make sure to place the solar panels in a sunny location.
Typical anatomy of solar security lights
- Passive Infrared Motion Detector – The motion detector triggers the light when any movement is sensed within a 180 degree radius. It can cover a distance of 10 to 20 meters. On high-quality solar security lights, the sensitivity of the motion detector can be adjusted, in order to make sure that cats, dogs and other animals do not activate the light inopportunely. The lighting period can also be adjusted from few seconds to minutes. On some solar security lights for example, an interesting option is the built-in sound alarm. The siren and the light are triggered at the same time. This sound feature can be turned-off.
- Solar Panel – The solar panel is a stand-alone component that connects to the solar security light by a long wire. In most cases the length of cable gives enough flexibility for positioning the panel in a convenient and sunny place. The sole duty of the solar panel is to charge the battery during the day.
- Light Bulb – In general, 6 volt halogen bulbs are used on solar motion detector lights. However, super bright LEDs (Led Emitting Diodes) are beginning to appear on new solar security lights. LEDs require less energy from the battery, resulting in a much longer operating time. In addition to that, you will probably never need to change the LED bulbs as they are designed to run up to 100,000 hours.
- Battery – A 6 volt rechargeable sealed lead acid battery is commonly used for this kind of solar lights. Such batteries can last 2 to 4 years without any maintenance involved. On LED solar security lights, because of the low power consumption of LEDs AA type rechargeable batteries are used.
Solar powered security lights come in a wide variety of styles, to suit every budget and application
When it comes to security lighting, don’t go for cheap makes. Home security is important. When installing solar security lights, it’s critical to remember to fasten the fixture high enough, so that no one can tamper with it. Once installed, it takes 2 or 3 days for the solar light battery to be well charged and ready to operate. As always with all solar lights, the solar panel needs to be cleaned regularly.
